What to Expect
Let the planting develop.
A perennial herb in suitable climates, often grown seasonally in colder areas. Mature flowering plants can be tall. This is herb fennel; a swollen Florence fennel bulb is not the intended harvest.

Feathery green texture, golden flower umbels, and anise-scented foliage.
Fennel brings height without heaviness: a cloud of fine green fronds beneath warm yellow flower umbels. This is common green herb fennel, grown for its foliage, flowers, and eventual aromatic seed. Give it room at the back of an herb bed or sunny border, where its airy structure can rise above lower flowers. Fennel also serves as a host plant for swallowtail butterflies. A textural botanical for the Gin & Chartreuse palette, with a character all its own.

How to Plant
Before broadcasting, thoroughly mix this individual seed with dry sand, vermiculite, or another clean, dry carrier. A carrier is strongly recommended for most individual species and is especially important for small or lightweight seed. Direct sow about ¼–½ inch deep in full sun and well-drained soil. Allow about 18 inches or more between mature ornamental plants. Keep moist through establishment, then water as conditions require. Give tall stems space; remove unwanted seed heads to manage self-sowing.

Take modest amounts of fresh fronds once plants are established. Flowering and seed production come later and may require overwintering, depending on local conditions. Leave some foliage for caterpillars when growing it as a host plant.
