Common Hyssop

Aromatic narrow leaves and blue-violet flowers on a compact perennial herb.

Common Hyssop adds a clear blue-violet note to the herb garden: narrow aromatic leaves, upright flower stems, and a compact, woody-based shape that holds its place in a sunny border. Bees and other pollinators visit the flowers. Use it along a path, among Mediterranean-style herbs, or as an aromatic accent in a custom planting. This is true common hyssop, Hyssopus officinalis, the species selected for Gin & Chartreuse; anise hyssop is a different plant.

What to Expect

Let the planting develop.

A perennial aromatic subshrub. Expect roots and structure to develop before the fullest flower display. Blue to violet flowers typically appear in the warmer growing season; timing varies with site and climate.

How to Plant

Prepare, sow, and press.

Before broadcasting, thoroughly mix this individual seed with dry sand, vermiculite, or another clean, dry carrier. A carrier is strongly recommended for most individual species and is especially important for small or lightweight seed. Sow about ¼ inch deep, keep lightly moist through germination, and thin or transplant about 12–18 inches apart. Choose a sunny site with excellent drainage. Water to establish; established plants tolerate drier conditions better than persistently wet ground.

As the garden develops

Make room for the whole plant.

Grow primarily for aromatic foliage, flower detail, and pollinator visits. Take modest leafy tips only once plants are well established.
